Hypercholesterolemia in hypertensive patients.

Background: Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are important modifiable risk factors for ischaemic heart disease. Lipoprotein disorders may lead to a number of sequelae including Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Place of Study: Department of Medicine, lsra University Hospital; from January to June 2003. Objective: To assess hypercholesterolemia as a risk factors for CAD in hypertensive patients. Material & Methods: One hundred hypertensive patients, between 18 years to 70 years of age were studied for hyperlipidemia, ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus. These patients were screened in medical OPD. Results: In a total of one hundred hypertensive patients, forty-six per cent were found to have plasma cholesterol level >180 mg/dl. Out of these forty-six hypertensive and hypercholesterolaemic patients, it was found that twenty-three (50%) had ischemic heart disease as evident on history and ECG changes. Further, twenty seven (27%) patients out of hundred hypertensive patients had diabetes mellitus as evident on history and blood sugar levels. Conclusions: In hypertensive patients other risk factors for coronary artery disease should be looked for, and treated concomitantly.
