Relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and childhood behavioral problems.

Objective: To find out the frequency of relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and childhood behavioral problems. Design: This is a co-relation study. Placement and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the children`s hospital of PIMS, special education center, Beaconhouse school and City school. It was conducted from Feb 2005 to Jun2005. Subject/Method: Sample of 30 children and 30 mothers were taken. Fifteen children were diagnosed with behavioral problems and 15 were in main stream. Self-reporting inventory were administered for measuring depressive symptoms. Result: The level of depression among study group (mothers of behavioral problem children) is 66.7% and in control group 33.3% mothers don`t have any depressive symptoms. High rate of depression found in mothers belonging to middle class family compared with high class. Also mothers of behavioral problem children who have more than 3 children are more depressed. Conclusion: The frequency of depression is higher in mothers having children with behavioral problems compared to normal children. So there is a positive relationship between the childhood behavioral problems and maternal depressive symptoms.
