Response of multidrug resistant Tuberculosis to second line anti-tuberculous drugs, A study of 30 cases.

Object: To study the response of MDR TB to second line antituberclous drugs, with regard to Sputum smear conversion, General improvement and X-Ray findings. Design: A descriptive study of 30 cases of culture proven MDR TB. Place and Duration: Department of Medicine, PGMI, HMC, Peshawar in collaboration with Pulmonology Department, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, during the period January 2003 to April 2005. Subjects and Methods: 30 cases of culture proven MDR TB with normal Renal and Hepatic functions were included in the study. A complete history was taken from each patient and a thorough physical examination was done on each patient and findings noted. All patients fulfilling the criteria were started on second line anti tuberculosis drugs and followed up regularly with sputum smears for AFB, Chest X-Rays for the duration of treatment and up to one year after the completion of therapy. The results were analyzed using SPSS. Results: Of the 30 patients studied 16 were males and 14 were females with Mean ages of 35 and 27 years respectively. A good response was seen in 23 patients responded fairly with their sputa becoming negative for AFB after a Mean period of six months. 3 patient at 6 months and 1 year follow up. Conclusion: The second line anti tuberculosis drugs are effective in the treatment of MDR TB.
