Frequency of carcinoma in Thyroidectomies for non-toxic Multinodular Goitre.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the frequency of carcinoma in thyroidectomies for multinodular goitre (MNG). Design: This was a prospective descriptive study. Place and Duration Study: Department of General Surgery Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad during a period of two years from 1st October 2000 to 30th September 2002. Patients and Methods: 200 patients of clinically and biochemichally euthyroid multinodular goitre were included in the study. All patients diagnosed as thyroid carcinoma preoperatively were excluded from the study. Patients underwent subtotal thyroidectomy (SIT) after complete preoperative evaluation. Recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands were routinely identified and saved. The histopathology reports were collected in OPD on follow up and the results were analyzed. Results: The main symptom was swelling in front of neck. Fifty-three patients (26.5 %) had pressure symptoms like dyspnoea, and hoarseness of voice. Out of 200 patients, 19 patients (9.5%) were reported to be suffering from carcinoma. Papillary carcinoma was most common (57.89%) malignancy.
