Susceptibility pattern of Vibrio cholerae: Experience at PIMS.

Background: In Pakistan, the endemicity of Vibrio cholerae in not precisely known but the workers have reported, both in children and adults, sporadic cases of gastroenteritis due to Vibrio cholerae. Aim: To establish the serotypes of Vibrio cholerae endemics in our population and to determine the sensitivity pattern of the organism. Patients and Method: During the period of study, all children < 12 years age with acute onset of diarrhea and dehydration were screened for Vibrio cholerae. Stool samples were collected in alkaline peptone water container and inoculated on Mac Conkey`s, SS, and TCBS agars. The organism was identified by different biochemical tests and using API 20E. Serological confirmation was done by standard anti-sera. Antibiotic sensitivity was carried out against Ampicillin, Cotrimoxazole, Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Chloramphenicol, Nalidixic acid, Ofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion technique. Results: All isolated cases of El-Tor biotype Ogawa were resistant to Nalidixic acid; however, they were sensitive to Doxycycline, Ofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin. Conclusions: Vibrio Cholerae is endemic in Rawalpindi and Islamabad; El-Tor was the biotype Ogawa; all isolates were resistant to Nalidixic acid and sensitive to Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, Doxycycline and Erythromycin.
