Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;1(1):27-31.

Objective: To see the frequency of erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with diabetes mellitus and its correlation with the duration of diabetes. Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: The department of General medicine PIMS Islamabad from 1st August 2004 to 28th February 2005. Subjects and Methods: One hundred male diabetic patients (86 with type 2 and 14 with type1) of 16-65 years age were enrolled. Patients were interviewed and examined for ED and other complications like diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, dermopathy and foot. IIEF-5 was used to quantify the ED. Lipid profile was performed in 41 patients. Results: Of the 100 patients (mean age 48.25 years, SD-13.22) 60 were found to have ED; 18 mild, 20 moderate and 22 severe ED. ED was 87.5% in patients having diabetes for >10years. 6 patients were having very good control of diabetes and all were normal and out of 15 patients of good glycemic control 5 were having mild to moderate ED. 83.8% patients were found to have ED in age group 56-65 years. Diabetic neuropathy was found in 40%, retinopathy 48.3%, dermopathy 8.3%, postural drop 21.6% and foot ulcers 21.6% of diabetic impotent persons. Conclusion: The study offers a quantitative estimate of the frequency of ED in DM. The frequency of ED was higher in subjects with longer duration of diabetes, poor glycemic control, advancing of age, and other diabetic complications like neuropathy, retinopathy and foot ulcer.
