A study of sexual dysfunction in depressed males.

Objective: To find out the frequency and different types of sexual dysfunction in men suffering from depression and currently not taking any antidepressants and any other psychotropics. Setting: The study was conducted at the outpatient psychiatric services of PIMS, Islamabad, over a period of six months. Design and Method: A cross sectional comparative study was conducted by administering the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale for males to selected fifty depressed males who were currently not taking any antidepressants (study group) and to another fifty selected from general population who were not depressed (control group). Results: In study group 30% of the men had sexual desire disorders (Decreased libido), (30%) had sexual arousal disorders (Male Erectile disorder), 20% had retarded ejaculation, and 30% had premature ejaculation (Male orgasmic disorders). In the control group 20% had sexual desire disorder, 20% had sexual arousal disorder, 06% had retarded ejaculation, 34% had premature ejaculation while 20% had no sexual dysfunction. Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction is very common in Pakistani men especially in depressed ones. Decreased sexual desire leading to other sexual dysfunctions is associated with mood disorder and practitioners need to be aware to address this problem.
