Viral Hemorrhagic Fever in Karachi 2005.
Infect Dis J Jan ;14(4):133-4.

In order to track the epidemic, identify the causative organism and institute appropriate preventive measures, a collaborative effort was made by four large health care institutions in the city. (Civil Hospital Karachi, Liaquat National Hospital, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center and Aga Khan University Hospital) The outbreak of hemorrhagic fever was attributed to dengue and began to slow in January 2006. This outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever, illustrates the risk of similar outcomes of diseases that may be more wide spread and deadly (e.g. avian influenza A/(H5N1)). Developing and formalizing a mechanism for outbreak detection, surveillance, and management at the health facility level will require partnerships between institutions, across sectors, and with governmental and nongovernmental entities. Public-private partnership is essential to successfully identify outbreak situations, isolate the causative organism(s) and develop appropriate control and prevention strategies for the city.
