Peribiliary glands in association with Intrahepatic Bile Ducts of Human Liver.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;49(1):51-3.

The morphology and pattern of distribution of peribiliary glands in association with intrahepatic bile ducts, hitherto poorly described, were examined in autopsied human livers. It was revealed that glands are present in association with intrahepatic large bile ducts. Histologically, the glandular structure could be classified into two types. One was located within the bile duct wall, referred to as intramural glands. These were mucous glands. Another type of gland was found mainly within the periductal connective tissue in the form of lobules. These glands were termed extramural glands. These were made up of seromucous acini. The mucous cells of both glands contained mucin like substance. The pattern of distribution of glands along the intrahepatic part of biliary tree was of two types. In two out of 20 livers under study the glands were limited upto segment ducts while in other cases they extended upto area ducts.
