PakMediNet Discussion Forum : Medical Research in Pakistan : HELP!!!!!!
Hey im a medical student and ive always been more inclined towards research than practice. Ofcourse both go hand in hand but at the moment research seems to get my attention more than the patients. I was wondering how you go about publishing an article/review paper in pakistan or aborad? if anyone knows a website or if anyone can take some time out to guide me id be really thankful. Plus can i send something in for publication as a student as i have yet to complete my MBBS degree and dont have DR with my name !!!

You can get help from the guidelines given in PakMediNet 'Research Guildelines' area. Learning how to do a medical research is a slow and long process and you need to get help from Professors, journals etc.
Lets see if anybody here in Forum wants to help you or not.

IT is a very pleasant surprise and an excellent indication of future of academic medicine. Infact all medical students need to be encouraged to at least write case reports or reviw articles if the setup of research is lacking. I can suggest a topic related to Hepatits C as this is a very common problem. You may find plenty of material in www.medscape.com specially in the HCV Resource center. Feel free to contact me for any help you still may need.
Best regards and good luck

When you say "research" I think you are confused. Writing papers or articles is NOT research, and especially the way papers are written in Pakistan it is not research at all. 90% of the papers i read are not even worth a review. This is the reason hardly anything is accepted internationally coming out of Pakistan. Research need dedication and total commitment. I have done clinical medicine for 15 years before switching full time to research - and the amount of research material (journal papers, conference papers, patents, invention disclosures) I have produced in last one year is more than I did in last 12 years. If you want to have a career in research then you have to get out of clinical medicine and put all your efforts in it. There is no infrastructure and not much money in it - but it is much more satisfying personally.

I think all responses to your query are partially correct. You do not need to quit clinical medicine to do research. Research means observing existing data, formulating hypotheses and then testing those hypotheses either in clinic or at bench.
There is plenty of clinical research going on by physicians around the world who have not quit taking care of live human beings. In fact it is much more satisfying to do it this way.
Proper research, however has several requirements, not the least of which is familiarity with research ethics.
I could certainly guide you or anyone else if anyone is interested

Formulating a research question is the first step in designing any research project. The research question is the uncertainity about something that you want to resolve. In order to formulate a research question, you need to read and master the relevant literature. Therefore, you will need to develop a special interest in one narrow field and read thoroughly about it. Only then you will be able to formulate a research question. And remember, this is just the first step. (Research is a hard work while at the same time it is fascinating). As someone once said, there is no royal road to science.
Once you have formulated a question, only then you can try to make it a "good" research question. A good research question is one which is do-able, which means it needs adequate number of subjects, it is affordable in time and money, and at the same time it is novel and relevant.
Please come up with a question that interests you and then we all can try to design a do-able project for you.

i agree with you on the definition of research. i have no knowledge of how researches are being done in pakitan but i am aware of the fact that we as pakistani students are not recognized in the world with a good name.
it's like off topic but i would like to high light on the aspec that when doctors from pakistan come to foreign countries with a big degree after their names what they get is jobs in ware houses, cleaning departments etc.
people here are scared to do a degree in pakistan!
anyway one person cannot do anything
all we can do s talk about it!

Mehwish, can you please update your profile as you have written HSC-2 and "high school student" in your qualification & occupation fields respectively.
I totally agree with your point of view and one of the reason to start PakMediNet was to promote medical research of Pakistan around the world so that people can know about that. I am pretty sure that the quality of Pakistani papers has been improved to a large extent. People are working despite total lack of resources & guidance. eg: This website is a voluntary effort.

Research in the field of Medicine can be divided in two main groups: Basic Science Research and Clinical Research. Translational Research (bench to bedside research) can be considered part of either of these two groups or a third group in itself. Not only that I think it is unnecessary to leave clinical practice completely for research (both for Basic and Clinical Research), continuing clinical practice is of paramount importance if one wants to do clinical research.
Regarding above comment about Pakistani graduates --- there are good, average, and bad medical graduates from every medical school. I am very proud to say that graduates from Pakistani medical schools not only do very well in United States, some of them are at very prominent places. And this is true for both older graduates and recent graduates. One can find Pakistani graduates among the faculty as well as in the residency/fellowship programs of such great institutions as Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic.

I believe you should get in touch with the Pakistan Medical Research Council. Their website is www.pmrc.gov.pk
All the best in your future
