ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTS
dear friends!! we recently conducted a study at Multan and Bahawalpur to find the frequency of anemia among medical students. the results were astonishing.
29% female medical students had hemoglobin below 9 gm%. it was much more than that in male medical students where only 2% had Hb below 9 gm%. is it all due to menstruation?
as medical students are mostly from good background and probably there is least gender discrimination among this sector of society, we should not expect nutritional deficiency among female medical students. then what is the cause??
pl give your valuable comments.
what we should do to find this factor?

Re: ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTSWell in my humble opinion first of all it should be documented whether this anemia is normocytic normochromic, or hypochromic microcytic ( on the basis of peripheral blood picture). Only then would we able to comment on the etiology of this anemia.

Re: Re: ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTSThanx Usman. we had done peripheral blood morphology in all these anemic persons and most of them had microcytic hypochromic anemia. this study will be published soon

Re: Re: Re: ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTS
Interesting, have you noticed any other evidence of malnutrition? low BMI, low albumin etc.
Do you guys think this is all due to iron deficiency or there may be other reasons for hypochromic microcytic anemia?

Re: Re: Re: Re: ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTSAs far as our results show, this anemia is most probably related to menstrual blood loss in females and "junk" food.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ANEMIA AMONG FEMALE MEDICAL STUDENTSYup. That's rite. Iron lost via menstrual blood not being replaced in diet... So any senior members on the forum kindly advise all juniors regarding what sort of diet should be used in Iron deficiency ?? Red meat or whatever ??
