Causes of Non-Compliance in Patients with Open Angle Glaucoma.

Purpose: To document the causes of non-compliance in patients with open angle glaucoma. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in Outpatient Department of Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from 1st September to 30th November 2011. Results: A total of 200 patients with open angle glaucoma were included in the study and their compliance to medications was checked. Causes of non-compliance were on-off use of medications (24.43%), improper timing of dose (16.03%), pressure controlled leading to discontinuation of treatment (15.27%), no improvement in visual acuity with treatment (12.21%), side effects of drugs (9.92%), costly medications (9.8%), confusing glaucoma medications with other drugs (6.87%) and physical disability (6.10%). Conclusion: The main cause for non-compliance to glaucoma medications was poor health education of patients about glaucoma disease.
